Beans and Grains in the Cascades

We on the Enumclaw Plateau should take note of this recent article in High Country News. It features a Willamette Valley farmer and his part in a local movement to grow organic grains and beans instead of the specialty foods that are sometimes the focus of organic farming.
Beans and grains are staples of most diets, but can be hard to find locally grown in our maritime climate. In spite of the numerous setbacks this organization has experienced since its inception in January, 2008, the Southern Willamette Valley Bean and Grain Project is thriving. Food activist Harry MacCormack, one of its founders, says "the main obstacles remain mind-set and infrastructure. And those are obstacles that can be overcome."
