"The number of Washington State farms rose 6% between 2000 and 2008, with 90% owned by individuals or families. Washington now has about the same number of farms as it did in 1970.
The total acreage in farming has shrunk but net farm income is higher than it's been in nearly 20 years.
Local food processing also has grown, and the number of farmers'markets has more than doubled since 1998.
